My veterinarian recently prescribed medication to help manage my small dog’s cough. After reviewing X-rays, the vet advised me to start the medication, Tussagon (hydrocodone/Homatropine), immediately because the imaging showed that my dog’s trachea wall appeared thinner, which could indicate a risk of collapse. After several unsuccessful attempts to refill the prescription at my local CVS, I was instructed to contact Bloomington Drug and Gift. When I called, a pharmacist (whose name I unfortunately did not catch) collected preliminary information to create a profile and told me the medication would be ready the following morning at 9:00 a.m. When I called the next morning, the experience became confusing and frustrating. The staff member I spoke with seemed unsure who had previously taken my information and said there was no order in the system. I was then quickly transferred to another pharmacist. When I asked if they could locate my profile, it was eventually confirmed, though the interaction felt tense. When I asked if they could determine who had entered my information, I was told they could not and that they would need to locate the pharmacist I had originally spoken with. During this conversation, I was told that I was giving “attitude,” when in reality I was simply trying to explain how the situation had unfolded before being transferred again. Another pharmacist then took the call and asked about my prescription. I explained the veterinary clinic and location that issued it, but before I could finish, I was told that if specific information was missing, they would not be able to fill the prescription. I asked what information they had so we could review it together before I made the trip to the pharmacy. I also explained that the veterinarian’s full name and license number were listed on the prescription. I was told they would still need to physically see it. When I arrived at the pharmacy, my prescription was denied because my date of birth was not written on the prescription for my dog. I was extremely confused by this requirement. I even offered to present my Minnesota driver’s license, but I was told that my date of birth had to be written directly on the prescription by the veterinarian. I was informed that the only solution would be to obtain a rewritten prescription. Unfortunately, when I later attempted to contact my local vet to resolve this, I discovered the clinic was closed that day due to being understaffed. Jeff, the final pharmacist who assisted me, did attempt to contact my veterinarian and the clinic, and I appreciate that effort. He also suggested that I visit the WellHaven clinic in Savage to see if they could rewrite the prescription. When I arrived and explained the situation, the staff at WellHaven were surprised that Bloomington Drug had been unable to fill the prescription. After making several calls, the veterinarian there helped identify another pharmacy where I could finally have the prescription filled. From my perspective, this situation came down to a rigid procedural judgment call that created significant barriers to obtaining medication my vet said my dog needed to start immediately. I later learned that the FDA does not require the pet owner’s date of birth for a pet prescription. While I understand that pharmacies must follow regulations, it was confusing that there was no alternative way to verify my identity, such as using my Minnesota driver’s license. Overall, the experience left me feeling exhausted, frustrated, and disappointed. When an animal’s health is at risk, processes should help facilitate care rather than create unnecessary obstacles. This situation made me deeply concerned about how similar situations might affect both animals and people who rely on timely access to medication.
Listen to the reviews. This place is a joke. They stay in business because they are one if the few compounding pharmacies around. I have been with them over a year and every time I get a refill they say they will call. They never do. They not once called to tell me a prescription is ready. So this time I asked the person on the phone to give me an idea of timeframe because I live 25 min from the pharmacy and need to plan the time to come get it. She kept saying they would call. I said that they have never called and they say the will every time- which is fine because I know they are busy but I’d just like an idea when to expect it. She only offered to sign me up for their texting program- which has never been offered in the over a year I have been there. I signed up for that but never heard anything so I called three days later only to be told it wasn't ready and they need 4-5 days to fill prescriptions right now. Um, what? Pretty sure I asked for an ETA and was refused one. But no mention of 4-5 days even being a possibility. It was a Tuesday that I called the prescription in, so 4-5 days would be a weekend when they are closed. So it’s actually more like 6-7 days. Well, my insurance won’t cover the prescription if I fill it early, but if I call it in when it’s due, I have to wait a week to get it. So now I am out of meds. I could have had my provider call it into a different pharmacy farther away if they had just answered me when I asked for an ETA. Now by the time I do that, the prescription would probably be done- after days with no meds. DO BETTER. Your business is in people's MEDICATIONS- it’s not chewing gum people are going with out. If you are too busy to get the prescription done in a timely manner- TELL ME THAT. Let me decide if I want to wait or move on to something more timely. I will never come back after this and be sure to let my provider know not to send people here unless it’s a last resort.
If you don't mind waiting forever for your prescriptions and poor service then this is the place for you! My cat was recently diagnosed with cancer. Our vet called in a prescription in for a medication that we need before we can start further treatment. This was on 2/23/26. We didnt hear from the pharmacy that they recieved the prescription so we called the following day on 2/24/26. Whoever we talked to claimed that they had called the day of receiving the rx, but we didnt have a missed call or voicemail. I'm assuming they lied about trying to call because every other time they've called there has been no issues. I called again on 2/25/26 to check the status of our prescription and was told it was going to be 4 - 5 more days to be prepared. I told them to just go ahead and cancel it because we cant continue to prolong treatment for our cat. Magically then I was told it would be ready by noon the next day. Everything about our experience has been incredibly frustrating.
First off, their phone system is TERRIBLE. My fiancé recently had surgery and I had to call to get some information on when the prescription would be available to pick up as I had not gotten a message or call from the pharmacy on estimated time. I was on hold for 32 MINUTES when I called the first time. When the girl answered, I was then transferred to the compound pharmacist as he had more information than she did. As SOON as the male pharmacist said “Hello”, I wasn’t given even a second to respond before he HUNG UP ON ME!!. So I called back again, this time on hold for 27 minutes! The same girl answered and I told her that the pharmacist had hung up on me and she was very apologetic and would get the info herself! She put me on a very brief hold (3-4 minutes) and told me it would be done end of day Thursday. So I head into the pharmacy Friday and spoke with a very pleasant lady. She went to the back to ask about the medication that was still not ready and told me that the pharmacist said the medication was not done and wouldn’t be done until end of day TUESDAY. I was so taken aback as I told her I had called Wednesday and they said it would be done Thursday end of day. She then informed me that they were days behind!!! A nice phone call would have sufficed but I drove 30 mins just for a “come back in 4 days”??? I understand that there might be some issues that pop up that are out of their control but the lack of communication is CRAZY.
